What is Generative Art? A definition

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Generative art has been defined as “any art practice where the artist creates a process, such as a set of natural language rules, a computer program, a machine, or other mechanism, which is then set to motion with some degree of autonomy contributing to or resulting in a complete work of art.” (Philip Galanter).

Light Diffusion in Multi-Layered Translucent Materials (technical paper)

Wednesday, June 15th, 2005

This paper introduces a shading model for light diffusion in multi-layered translucent materials. Previous work on diffusion in translucent materials has assumed smooth semi-infinite homogeneous materials and solved for the scattering of light using a dipole diffusion approximation. This approximation breaks down in the case of thin translucent slabs and multi-layered materials. We present […]

CityEngine: The City Builder

Monday, June 13th, 2005

Procedural modeling of cities.
Modeling a city poses a number of problems to computer graphics. Every urban area has a transportation network that follows population and environmental influences, and often a superimposed pattern plan. The buildings appearances follow historical, aesthetic and statutory rules. To create a virtual city, a roadmap has to be designed and a […]

hack a day is reporting about SplineScan, an open source, a cross platform 3D scanning tool whose expected cost is about 90 USD.

A description of how the scanner works:
While the target object is rotating on a motion controlled turntable a laser is projected on it. A camera collects images of each step of the […]

Google Earth, browse the World in 3D, Real time

Sunday, June 5th, 2005

source
According to Windipundit, Google is releasing to selected Keyhole users a beta version of the Google Earth application.

Since it is an actual software program running on your local PC, Google Earth is much faster and smoother in rendering satellite maps of the entire Earth than GoogleMaps. It initially draws a blurred version of the region […]

Futurismo Zugakousaku, real time motion graphics with Quartz Composer

Thursday, June 2nd, 2005

Real-time motion graphics can be made by Quartz Composer in a short time. I redeveloped “The 20th Century Voyage” from scratch by using Quartz Composer. You can also drag qtz files into your screensaver folder (~/Library/Screen Savers) and use them in that way.
I can’t see the QuickTime Videos on my Windows XP machine.

Bathsheba Grossman Sculpting Geometry: three dimensions between art and science

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

I’m an artist exploring the region between art and mathematics, and this is my gallery and storefront. My work is about life in three dimensions: working with symmetry and balance, getting from a zero point to infinity, and always finding beauty in geometry.
Here you’ll find my signature designs in metal, along with 3D laser-etched […]

Treehugger: Smart LED’s from Rensselaer will Adjust to Your Body Clock

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

LED’s not only will save huge amounts of energy (they don’t yet but theoretically can) but can be used in much more sophisticated ways. Because different colours can be so easily mixed, they see opportunities galore:
-lights that change colour through the day to adjust to our bodies circadian rhythm-”
-brake lights that can communicate with the […]

Genomorama, interactive display of multiple genomes

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

Genomorama is a software program for interactively displaying multiple genomes. In this context, a genome refers to DNA sequence and an (optional) collection of annotations (indicating which DNA sub-sequences correspond to genes, RNAs, proteins etc.). Genomorama was designed to assist in comparative genomics, sequence comparison and sequence analysis. To this end, Genomorama provides a […]

SlumberLight, Glowing Blocks for Reactive, Expressive Telepresence

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

A slumber light is a luminescent cube containing a photograph of a distant friend or family member that glows when that person is asleep. I designed them for a specific long distance relationship between my son, age 3 and my grandmother, age 95.
Scenario:
Sam, climbs into bed for his nighttime stories. Below his mattress is a […]

Art of Science Competition / Gallery

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

This spring we asked the Princeton University community to submit imagery produced in the course of research or incorporating tools and concepts from science. The response was overwhelming: more than 200 entries from nearly 100 individuals in 15 departments. We selected 55 of these works to appear in the 2005 Art of Science Exhibition.
The resulting […]

regenerative web page

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

regenerative is the second part of the degenerative experiment, in which a web page became increasingly corrupted each time it was visited. in the regenerative web page, text degenerates with each visit, but it also attempts to regenerate itself by trying to extract some text from the refering page. if extraction succeeds, the new text […]
